DSA Leadership Applicant
"Through my experience as a prefect, I have learnt to stay calm in uncertain situations, understand different perspectives, and make fair decisions.
Leadership is not about power or status, but instead it is an opportunity to serve, to uplift and to bring about positive change with our words and actions inspiring others"
About Me

I believe leadership is about having the courage to step forward, the humility to listen to others, and the responsibility to positively influence the people around me through my actions and decisions. Through my experiences as a prefect, student leader, and involvement in community service activities, I have learnt the importance of empathy, adaptability, communication, and staying calm when handling different situations.
I enjoy supporting others, contributing ideas, and taking initiative to improve situations both in school and within the community. Whether through guiding classmates, leading during school activities, public speaking opportunities, or participating in outreach projects, these experiences taught me that leadership is not only about guiding others, but also about understanding people and contributing meaningfully to society.
As I continue to grow, I hope to become a thoughtful, resilient, and compassionate leader who is willing to embrace challenges, learn from experiences, and contribute positively to both the school community and the wider society.
My Journey
"My leadership journey reflects how I have grown from carrying out simple responsibilities to becoming a more confident and thoughtful student leader who is able to guide others, take initiative, and make calm decisions in different situations."

Primary 1
Prefect
As a senior Prefect in Primary 6, I took on greater responsibilities during school duties and events. Through different situations and experiences, I learnt how to stay calm, think carefully, and handle situations more independently. These experiences helped me grow into a more confident and thoughtful student leader who is able to guide others, take initiative, and make decisions while considering the well-being of others.
Prefect
As a Prefect in Primary 5, I became more confident in carrying out duties and supporting younger students during school activities and events. I learnt how to communicate more clearly, work better with other prefects, and guide others patiently. During this year, my design ideas also inspired elements of the final cohort shirt worn by the 2026 graduating cohort. This experience taught me that contributing ideas can also positively impact the school community.
Prefect
In Primary 4, I was given the opportunity to become a Prefect. Through school duties and activities, I learnt how to become more disciplined, responsible, and aware of the people around me. I also learnt how to guide others respectfully and carry out duties independently.
PE Leader
PE Leader
As a PE Leader, I helped to prepare PE equipment such as balls, hoops, and cones before lessons started. I also helped to gather classmates and support teachers during games and activities. This experience helped me become more confident in communicating and working with others.
As a PE Leader again in Primary 3, I became more confident in handling responsibilities independently. Besides preparing equipment, I also helped to guide classmates during activities, settle small disagreements, and refer situations to teachers when needed. Through this experience, I learnt patience, teamwork, and how to stay calm during situations.
Monitress
As a Class Monitress, I helped my teachers with simple classroom duties such as reminding classmates about routines and helping to maintain order in class. Through this role, I learnt the importance of responsibility and setting a good example for others
Leadership
"Walk in integrity, wisdom and humility. Courage to stand for what is right even when it is difficult. Leading others with love and understanding"
Leadership Experience
Managing a Situation During Duty
Situation
During my back-of-hall duty, it started raining heavily while students were still arriving at school. Many students were coming in through the unsheltered back entrance and were getting wet from the rain. Water from their uniforms and bags made the floor near the back of the hall wet and slippery, which could have caused students to slip and fall. I felt concerned for the students’ safety and comfort.
Action
As students were still entering through the same route, I checked with another prefect on duty and found out that the teacher guiding the students was new and did not know there was a sheltered walkway leading to the hall.
I informed the prefect to let the teacher know that students could be redirected through the sheltered walkway instead, so they would not continue getting wet in the rain.
At the same time, I also asked for newspapers to be placed on the wet floor to help absorb the water and reduce the risk of students slipping.
Outcome
Students were redirected through the sheltered walkway and were able to enter the hall more safely without getting wet from the rain. The wet floor situation was also managed, which helped reduce the risk of students slipping and allowed the school day to continue more smoothly.
Reflection
This experience taught me that leadership is not only about following instructions, but also about noticing problems, thinking ahead, and taking initiative to ensure the safety and well-being of others.
Handling a Difficult Situation Calmly
Situation
During prefect duty, I noticed a student pacing around the hall instead of being seated for silent reading. When I approached her, she avoided answering my questions clearly, looked frustrated, and even shot me a glare. As students were expected to remain seated quietly during silent reading, I knew I needed to understand the situation while ensuring order in the hall was maintained.
Action
I understood that reacting too quickly or too firmly might worsen the situation, especially since the student already seemed frustrated. I stayed calm and spoke to her again in a gentler tone to understand what had happened and how I could help.
After a few probing questions, she explained that she had forgotten her storybook and was waiting for another student to pass it to her. I shared that although I understood her situation, she should not continue pacing around the hall during silent reading as it could distract others. I suggested that she return to her classroom to wait for the book and come back once she had received it.
Outcome
Taking my suggestion, the student returned to her classroom to wait for the book. Silent reading was able to continue smoothly without further distraction, and the situation was resolved calmly without any escalation to teachers.
Reflection
This experience taught me that people may sometimes react badly because they are frustrated or worried about something. Instead of reacting too quickly, I learnt that staying calm and listening patiently can help solve situations more effectively while still maintaining order.
Leading in Group Activities
Situation
During the Sports Jamboree, I was helping to manage a game station together with two other prefects. We had to explain the game to students from different levels, but because the environment was very noisy with many other stations nearby, many students could not hear the instructions clearly. One of the prefects had to keep shouting while explaining the game, and eventually her voice became hoarse. Even then, some students were still confused and did not know how to play the game properly.
Action
I recognised that the issue was not just the students’ understanding, but also the environment. Instead of repeating instructions, I adjusted my approach by simplifying my explanation and using demonstrations to show how the game should be played. I realised that effective leadership is not just about giving instructions, but adapting to the situation to help others understand better.
Outcome
After I changed my approach and used demonstrations instead of only verbal instructions, the students were able to understand the game more clearly and participate more confidently. The activity became more organised, and communication between the prefects and students also improved.
Reflection
Effective leadership demands keen observation and quick adaptability. This experience taught me that leadership is not just about explaining things, but also about noticing problems and changing my approach to help others understand better. I also learnt the importance of staying calm and adapting to different situations.
Initiative
"Taking initiative means being aware of the people and situations around me, thinking about what can be done, and stepping forward to help without always waiting to be told. It also means acting responsibly to help others and improve situations."
Community Food Distribution Initiative
Description
I helped to pack and distribute food to elderly individuals, many of whom were living alone and had silver hair. While giving out the food, I also talked to some of them and listened to their stories. Through this experience, I realised that some elderly people spend a lot of time alone and may not have much support around them.
Although the food packs were simple, I felt that small actions like talking to them politely, greeting them warmly, and showing care could make them feel happier and less lonely.
Outcome
This experience taught me to be more caring and empathetic towards others, especially the elderly who may become frail and lonely at old age after losing their spouse or friends over time. I also realised that even small acts of kindness and taking time to lend a listening ear can make a meaningful difference in someone’s day.
Mission Trip to Bintan
Description
I took part in a mission trip to an orphanage in Bintan, Indonesia, where I spent time interacting with the children through games, drawing activities, and simple conversations. Although we could not communicate well because of language differences, we still managed to bond through games, drawings, and using a translator app on mobile phones. During the trip, I also learnt more about respecting different cultures and personal backgrounds. For example, I learnt that some children were uncomfortable with others patting their heads because it was seen as a caring action usually done by parents. This made me become more aware of how even small actions or gestures can affect others emotionally and taught me the importance of being respectful and sensitive towards others’ feelings.
Outcome
During the trip, I also learnt to be more sensitive towards different cultures and personal backgrounds. I realised that even small actions or gestures can affect how others feel, which taught me the importance of showing respect, empathy, and understanding when interacting with others.
Classroom Clean-Up (After School)
Description
While waiting after school for our parents, there was usually around 20 minutes before parents were allowed to enter the foyer for pick-up. During this time, I noticed that the classroom was often left messy after lessons. Instead of waiting for teachers to remind us, I suggested to a few classmates who were also waiting, to clean up the classroom together. We started by arranging tables, chairs, sweeping the floor, and tidying the classroom before our parents arrive. After some time, it slowly became something we would do regularly, and gradually more classmates started joining in as well.
Outcome
This experience taught me that taking initiative can start from small actions. I also realised that when someone takes the first step, it can encourage others to do the same and create a more caring and responsible environment.
Guiding & Supporting Classmates
Description
I supported three classmates who needed help with Mathematics and English after teachers assigned me to sit beside them during lessons during Primary 5. I guided them by explaining concepts in simpler steps, going through questions patiently, and encouraging them whenever they were unsure of their work. At times, I also used part of my recess when I did not have prefect duty to help them with difficult Mathematics problem sums and revise work that they did not understand well.
Outcome
Over time, they became more confident in their work and were more willing to participate during lessons. They were also very grateful and even gave me small handmade gifts and notes as tokens of appreciation.
Receiving the handmade gifts made me feel touched and encouraged because I did not expect anything in return for helping them. It reminded me that even small acts of support and encouragement can positively impact others more than I realised.
Growth
"I believe growth comes from learning through experiences, reflecting on my actions, and becoming more aware of how my words and decisions can influence and support others positively."

Learning to Lead Others
When I first became a student leader, I realised that leadership was not always easy. Sometimes, I found it difficult to guide my friends firmly without sounding too controlling, especially when handling responsibilities or making decisions during duties. Through these experiences, I slowly learnt that leadership is not about telling people what to do, but about listening, understanding situations calmly, and guiding others respectfully. I also realised that leaders sometimes need to make fair decisions even when they may not be the easiest choices.
-
What I Learnt
After gaining more experiences as a prefect, I slowly learnt that good leadership is not about being the loudest person or telling people what to do all the time. Instead, it is about staying calm, listening carefully, understanding situations before reacting, and guiding others respectfully. At the same time, I realised that leaders cannot always avoid difficult situations. Sometimes, leaders need to be assertive, make fair decisions, and prioritise what is right even when the decisions may not be the easiest or most popular ones.
-
Becoming More Confident
Over time, I became more confident in communicating with others and handling responsibilities independently. Through prefect duties, group activities, and school events, I learnt how to stay calm, explain things more clearly, and think more carefully before making decisions.
I also became more aware of how my actions and attitude could influence the people around me. Small actions, such as helping classmates, supporting younger students, or stepping forward during activities, taught me that leadership can be shown through consistency and responsibility.

Developing Communication & Confidence
Participation in Trinity Performance Arts, NAFA Junior Drama, and school drama activities helped me grow in confidence, communication, and self-discipline. Through performances, monologues, skits, and taking on Emcee roles during school activities, I learnt how to express myself more clearly, engage with audiences confidently, and work collaboratively with others.
These experiences also taught me the importance of preparation, responsibility, adaptability, and remaining composed under pressure.

Learning Beyond Myself
Through community service and interaction with others, I learnt the importance of empathy, kindness, and understanding different perspectives. Experiences such as food distribution and interacting with children during a mission trip helped me understand that meaningful contribution can come from both small actions and larger responsibilities.
These experiences reminded me that leadership is not only about leading others, but also about caring for people and contributing positively to the community around us.

Becoming a Better Leader
In secondary school, I hope to continue taking on leadership opportunities where I can apply what I have learnt and continue building my experiences. I hope to become someone who can positively influence and support the people around me through leadership. Through my experiences as a student leader, I have learnt how to communicate more confidently, stay calm during situations, and understand others better before making decisions. I also realised that good leadership is not just about guiding others, but also about listening, showing empathy, and setting a positive example through my actions.
Although I know there is still a lot for me to learn, I look forward to stepping out of my comfort zone, learning from new experiences, and growing into a thoughtful and responsible leader who can contribute positively to the school community.
